Transmedia and my project

Transmedia is something I didn’t realise how important it is and how it is literally used everyday without even knowing. From learning about Transmedia I now understand how the process of storytelling can be spread across different platforms. It’s all for a purpose in developing the story in a different way. For example looking at The Simpsons it started with a television series and now has games, comics and more which contributes to the overall story which people can go on and get a different aspect of the story.

The reason I have chosen to develop a blog to go along side my webcomic for my Transmedia project is because I want people to be able to read the blog and get a sense of my characters personality. My main character Erin is quite introverted and enjoys being by herself I feel like her writing a blog will help people have an understanding on why she feels this way about people. I want people be able to connect to my character, I think this is what Henry Jenkins was talking about when he mentions ‘synergy‘. Meaning different platforms are working together to create an overall outcome. Also, having a blog which Erin can write about her feeling and how events which happens during the day make her feel and this helps with the aspect of world building. This is because it gives people more of an insight into Erin‘s mind and what she has been going through, which some people might not get just from the webcomic alone.

The whole reason I chose to do a webcomic and blog is because I want to be able to connect with people on a personal level. If I was to do something like a game along side my webcomic for example I don’t think I would be able to get that personal connection as I think a blog would. Being able to focus on people that struggle to connect with people and chose to be more active online and choosing an online platform to go alone side my project fits as I’m focusing my research on online culture. Even through the comic will end people can go visit Erin’s blog and read about her day which they might have seen in the comic and get her thoughts and feelings which develops the overall story and adds depth and a new experience, which they might have not gotten from just reading the webcomic.
